Practice makes perfect for TMA, advances to the second round by NYHoops

Written by Dylan Kitts
Thurgood Marshall Academy’s performance two weeks ago versus archrival Wadleigh in the Manhattan Borough Championship game was nothing short of an embarrassment. Throughout the 30-point loss, they were out-hustled, out-executed, out-toughed, and any other “out-__” that you can possibly imagine.
Head coach Abdu-Allah Torrence held some of his toughest practices of the year the following week. His main emphases were running up and down the court and playing aggressive defense. During one drill, if a defender failed to retrieve a steal, he would be forced to do 10 push-ups.
Hard work pays off. Although trailing for the majority of the game, TMA’s defensive intensity held Robeson to only 15 points in the second half, en route to a 43-38 victory and a second round match-up against #1 seed Lincoln High.

Trevor Dillard 6'1 Thurgood Marshall (Manhattan) 13ppg 3rpg 4apg Dillard didn't put up huge numbers this year. But, that doesn't hinder his worth in my eyes. The only NYC PSAL player to attend Reebok All-American Camp 2008. Dillard is a big guard, who can be very effective at the next level in the right situation.

Givens big night lifts TMA over Environmental Studies NYHoops' Mike Libert

Jason Givens is a 6’3” senior at Thurgood Marshall. “I don’t care about my numbers. I can score 8 points and as long as we win, I am happy” stated Givens about what’s important to him on the basketball court. Well, on Thursday night in Harlem, Givens didn’t have 8 points, but his team won. In a game that Givens said “was the best game I have ever played in my life” he scored 42 points and had 24 rebounds, in which every point and rebound was important as TMA had a dogfight on there hands on the court. Even though the Panthers led for most of the 2nd half, Environmental Studies kept it close the entire way and even had a lead with less than 3 minutes to play, but led by Givens, and the strong play late of Antoine Hackman and Trevor Dillard, the Panthers pulled away late for the 78-71 win.

Final Push

As the Borough playoffs are around the corner the panthers ready themselves for the third and most important part of the season. Finishing a week where TMA went 0-3 would have anyone else worried about the team and the future it holds. Ironically though, the team continued to play better and fight even more as the week grew longer. The panthers lost to three tough opponents in the final week of the season Lasalle Academy on Monday, Food and Finance on Thursday and a tough Wings Academy on Friday. The Playoffs give you an idea that its all or nothing, win or go home, no second chances here, and get in where you fit in!!! What's important to remember is that too many wasted opportunities can turned into well elarned experiences for the playoffs. Bread and Roses comes to the jungle for a match up of the first round of the Borough playoffs and this is will be an exciting match up. As always the A schools look to take down the AA schools in the first round and give themselves a better chance and more notoriety. It creates for a great atmosphere as the Jungle will be rocking Tuesday night.

Senior Night

February 2, 2009 Senior Night is upon us when we celebrate the careers and time dedicated by these young men. Congratulations to Jason Givens, Trevor Dillard, Jamel Duncan, Anthony Ordonez, and Jeffrey Justice for sacraficing time and dedicating effort throughout the course of their career.

Month of January

The month of January has been an up and down month for the Panthers of Thurgood Marshall Academy. After a tough four point win vs. Food & Finance the Panthers dropped three in a row to Manahttan Center and Wadleigh HS at Home and a 40 point blow out loss to JFK HS on the road. The Panthers seem to self destruct around this time of the year which becomes a barometer of how the second half of the season will play out. Self centeredness has seemed to converge upon the TMA team early in the month of January coming off a very good trip in MD where the Panthers finished 2-1 and lost in the final game of the trip.

The panthers seem to bounce back with a four game winning streak starting with a one point win over Lehman HS whoch had just Wings Academy the previous night. Saturday in the Wadleigh HS Tournament TMA Defeated Bayside HS by 10 points in a group effort that gave the Panthers some confidence as they struggled to find their chemistry. The Panthers closed out the winning treak by pouncing on the lions of FDA by 40 points and earning a revenge victory over Monroe HS of the Bronx by 10 points. This game was especially gratifying because of the defeat the Panthers suffered by one point to Monroe HS last year where becasue of a referee error the Eagles of Monroe was afforded more time with the ball. With Panthers riding high they were scheduled with a match up with Express of Transit Tech.

Khalid Vaughn has been out 7 games due to various reasons and during that span the Panthers have suffered due to lack of depth at the guard position. The Panthers are 2-5 without Vaughn coming off the bench adding a spark to the TMA offense. Once again Vaughn is out of the lineup and others on the bench need to step up at the guard position. TMA goes down early to Transit Tech at 14 points at the half and claw back in the fourth quarter to bring the deficit to six points. Trevor Dillard fouled out first and then Jason Givens and left the Panthers with two of their starters condemned to the bench for the remainder of the game. Although TMA fought back to have a chance there was not enough fuel in the tank to complete the uphill charge. Transit Tech downed TMA by 10 points in a hard fought game by both teams.

TMA looked forward to competeing against a tough Brooklyn Collegiate team from the A division in the Young World Classic at the Gauchos gymnasium. Brooklyn Collegiate came out hard and fast scoring and keeping the Panthers on their heels. As the game went back and forth it became evident to TMA that Brooklyn Collegiate would not back down and a dog fight was apparent. TMA battled but eventually fell to Brooklyn Collegiate by 10 points as Jason Givens was MVP with 28 points.
